CERTIFIED HEAT-TREATED PALLETS

Heat treatment is a form of pest control for wood pallets produced in the United States. Using a kiln, pallets are heated to a core temperature that will ensure the safety and cleanliness of your pallets. For industries that require heat- treated pallets, Lonestar Pallets maintains an on-site kiln to treat each of our newreconditioned or remanufactured pallets.

INTERNATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

For businesses that plan on shipping to countries that are a part of the United Nations, you’ll want to make sure you have a trustworthy, certified source for heat-treated pallets. A treaty from the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) requires that all solid wood packaging (i.e. pallets) must be heat-treated or fumigated before being imported into any member country.

The ISPM 15 governs the appropriate processes to fumigate wood pallets, boxes, and crates. It requires that a pallet’s wood core temperature reaches 56° Celsius (or 132.8° Fahrenheit) for at least 30 minutes, or that the wood is fumigated with methyl bromide.

WHY HEAT-TREATED PALLETS ARE THE BEST CHOICE

At Lonestar Pallets, we prefer the heat treatment method that adheres to the ISPM standards. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advocates for phasing out the use of methyl bromide due to negative effects on the Earth’s ozone levels and potential to be toxic. Also, heat-treated pallets create a far safer working environment for everyone that comes in contact with the pallets.

To ensure that we produce IPPC compliant pallets, our heat treatment process involves heating the wood core temperature to IPPC-required levels. This meets the ISPM 15 Heat Treating Standards, which require a core temperature of 132.8° Fahrenheit.
